2nd Place Coin Holder

The shadow box I decided to create was of Las Vegas. I took pieces that would represent some of Las Vegas and gave them a creative display . I took the casino chips and mouthed them with the #6 coin mount. The dice is raised and then mounted with the two multi-purpose holders. I wanted the images of the Vegas hotels to stand out so I decided to attach black foam to the back of the images and by using the multi-purpose mount I was able to pinch and grab the foam from behind. This gave me a unique way to raise and mount my images. The image of the Vegas strip is attached to two pieces of black foam and mounted with two multi-purpose mounts. With all the images these mounts are not seen from top view. Finally, I mounted the pen by using two spoon/object holders. With this shadow box I wanted to use the mighty-mounts in a traditional way and also in a nontraditional way. I used multiple mounts to show unique variation within one shadow box. I attached casino playing cards, along with player cards, to the mat to add to my theme. Along the insides of the frame and behind the Las Vegas strip image I cut playing cards into pieces and attached them to foam strips to add a unique and creative touch. The mat used is Antique 4968, Onyx. The frame is Larson Juhl's Soho 345082. The fillets used were from Larson's Le Cirque collection 112154, 112147, 112162 & 112149. Size: 24 x 20

The object in the shadow box is a combination defibrillator and pacemaker. It was implanted in my husband’s chest following a massive heart attack and cardiac arrest nine years ago. The new defibrillator is half the size of this one. Since the defibrillator is what I consider to be very “high tech”, I wanted the frame package and design to reflect a “high tech” look. For me, that meant the frame had to be minimal and sleek in style. Larson’s metro steel tall was the perfect solution to house the package and is a similar color to the defibrillator. I used Bainbridge 4104-new threads for the defibrillator mounting. Crescent’s Elizabeth Dow mat board 1822-Dragnet is the top board chosen to carryout the “high tech” look. It also covers the side spacers in the frame. The heart depiction, found on the internet and downloaded for printing, was the inspiration for the rest of the design and colors. V-grooves became blood vessels around the defibrillator and as connectors to the “Thanks for Another Seven Years” plaque. The connector v-groove has a red and a blue side signifying the blood vessels coming into and out of the heart. I used Crescent suede mat boards Chinese Red and Sapphire for the
“blood vessels”. The heart depiction was printed on glossy photo paper, dry mounted to black foam board, and cut to size. Each is about 1 ½” by 1 ¾”. The foam board mounting creates some additional depth and interest for the viewer. The hearts are placed sporadically around the defibrillator to represent the erratic heartbeats the defibrillator protects against. The defibrillator is mounted to the mat board utilizing ½ of 2 mighty mounts knife holders – the portion with the base. Tiny slots were cut into the sides of the defibrillator and the knife holders fitted in to securely hold the defibrillator in place. Size: 16 x 18 1/4

1st Place Coin Holder

The gallery is constantly framing unusual items from around the world. I wanted to do a shadow box that reflected Southern New Jersey beaches. I chose many shells and objects I had found on NJ and Florida beaches. The delicate items lent themselves to coin holders for example the crab shells, sea star and scallop shell. The mighty mounts held them firmly yet delicately. But the problems arose with the spiral shells, conch and whelk. The object/spoon holder fit the bill. I was able to position the holder into the opening in the back. It held tight so I could position the shells on any angle. I used a Bainbridge linen board to give a texture quality to the piece. The shells were so unique that I labeled them with handmade paper. The frame is a Nielson shadow box frame to show how easy it is to create a fabulous box with the common items I have used.
